Hey everyone, it’s Kelsey again, with another vlog installment. Now that I’ve spent a few more weeks here at NEC, I have a lot more to talk about!

It didn’t take long to settle into my cubicle and my role here at the company. Being an intern is a little bit different than having a full-time position here. The nature of construction management and general contracting is that of surprise. Even when you think you know exactly how your day is going to flow, what you’ll be working on and who you’ll be seeing, you’re never truly correct. Every day at work is filled with surprises. Sometimes I’m sent to a job site unexpectedly, or have to make a few calls out to subcontractors, architects, and owners for clarification. Unexpected things happen.

Working in construction, and specifically, at NEC, is all about rolling with the punches. It’s about starting each day expecting to work, and maybe getting forced out of your comfort zone in the process. It’s about trying new things, even if you’re not confident in your abilities, all because your coworkers need your help. It’s about being a can-do team player, which is one of the company’s core values. You have to be willing to help the people you work with, and in turn, each of the engineers and managers will do everything they can to ensure your success.

The office provides a welcoming atmosphere, there’s no doubt about that, but there will always be twists and surprises which you weren’t expecting. It teaches you to think on your feet, and to understand when it is best to work it out on your own, or ask for help. NEC is a place to excel, but only if you’re willing to work hard. Now that I’ve been here a few weeks, I’ve gotten chances to do a little bit of everything. It’s provided me with a lot of valuable exposure that will definitely benefit me later down the line.

That’s it for now. Thanks for listening and join us again in a couple weeks to hear from Cevan on how his internship is shaping out.
