Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island awarded LEED Gold!

Providence, RI (18 December, 2009) - Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island’s new headquarters and hospice facility in Providence has received LEED gold certification, the agency announced last week. The agency says its headquarters is the first health care facility in Rhode Island, and only the second building in the state, to achieve gold level certification.

The four-story, 50,000-square-foot building that houses administrative offices, the 24-bed Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center and community and education spaces opened in June on North Main Street. The facility includes high-performance ventilation systems, a reflective roof to prevent heat absorption, low-flow water fixtures with motion sensors, underground water storage systems to collect, treat and return rainwater to underground aquifers, and low-VOC paints, carpets and furniture.

Home & Hospice Care said its decision to renovate an existing building rather than construct a new one also helped it reach its green goals. In addition, the agency said it used construction materials with recycled content and diverted 91 percent of construction and demolition debris from landfills. Providence-based Vision 3 Architects designed the building and New England Construction built it.

“From the start, our goal was to create a sustainable facility that matched our philosophy about the natural circle of life. With the creativity and guidance of Vision 3 and New England Construction, we not only achieved our goal, we surpassed it,” said Diana Franchitto, president and CEO of Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island.

The agency said in an effort to maintain an environmentally friendly philosophy it will use green cleaning supplies and has inked a four-year contract with a renewable energy provider to obtain 35 percent of facility’s electricity from renewable sources.
