What You’ll Get Out of This Opportunity

We are seeking a Controller to join our growing team.  The Controller is responsible for the accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, cash reconciliation, and the billing process at New England Construction. This includes monthly billing, cost and budget reporting, check runs, and financial closeout. In addition, the Controller position requires collaboration with project teams both internal and external, leadership, problem-solving, and implementation of NEC accounting processes and procedures. The Controller is responsible for the management of the AP Specialist and oversight of AP, AR, billing, and cash management. This position reports directly to the VP of Finance.

What You’ll Do

The essential duties and responsibilities for the Controller include, but are not limited to:

  • Overall responsibility for compliance with the NEC way for Accounts Payable, including invoice entry, routing, approval and payment. The controller will be supported by, and supervise, the AP Specialist, in a direct reporting capacity. The controller must have the ability to process invoices as a back-up to AP specialist if needed. Overall responsibility of check selection process based upon weekly project cash receipts (pay when paid); working with VP of Finance to approve all outgoing checks. Must manage all joint checks agreements on projects to ensure proper vendor payment.
  • The Controller will be responsible for the entire billing process including GMP bills, stipulated sum bills, and pre-construction quick bills. This includes the Controller being accountable for ensuring that all billing deadlines are met. The Controller will be supported by the Construction Administrators on the creation of bills and other billing related administration and required steps, such as the notarizing and scanning of bills. Must be proactive and engage with Project Teams to ensure that bills get out on time.
  • Must develop positive relationships with subcontractors, vendors and other external clients. Respond to all inquiries/requests in a timely manner and follow up until each issue is closed.
  • The position requires a thorough understanding of the Construction Administration process and ability to collaborate as needed.
  • Assist with project closeout for the office and field; help with financial closeout, identify issues with subcontractors and advise project team, archive project-related documents upon financial completion.
  • Take a leadership position related to the project cost reporting functions, including the scheduling and participating in the monthly job cost reporting meeting. Maintain the project profitability dashboard on a monthly basis.
  • Management of AR process, including overall responsibility for the bank deposits, reporting to team on status of outstanding receivables, collections and management of the AR module in Sage 300, including entering all deposits in the system.
  • Reconciliation of all weekly bank account transactions including checks, bank transfers, incoming and outgoing wires/ACHs, etc. Work with VP of Finance to ensure appropriate separation of duties in bookkeeping entries.
  • Support the VP of Finance on the monthly closing process including required journal entries, reconciliations and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting.
  • Ability to support VP of Finance during annual financial audit.
  • Ability to work with VP of Finance on annual budgeting and regular reviews of all accounts.
  • Management of daily and weekly activities related to banking and cash flow. Develop and maintain periodic cash flow forecasts as necessary and present regularly to the VP of Finance on the cash position of the company.
  • Required to meet with the VP of Finance on a weekly basis.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
What You’ll Need
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Ability to be a can-do team player within the Finance Department
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite is required
  • High level of Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required
  • Knowledge of construction contracting and financial principles including, but not limited AIA contracts and forms, including G702 and G703 is preferred
  • Ability to function in a leadership role and exhibit managerial skills
  • Must have experience with enterprise level construction accounting platform
  • Experience with SAGE 300 CRE software is a plus
  • Experience with Procore is a plus
What You’re Bringing to the Table
  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business, management, or related field.
  • Six or more years accounting/finance experience; construction industry experience highly desirable
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
