From Classroom to Construction: Our NEC Internship Experience

This summer, New England Construction had the pleasure of seven interns from different backgrounds, schools, and majors, all within our company. We are incredibly grateful for their contributions and will miss them so much as they move on—some to continue their studies, others to stay on part-time throughout the school year, and one to step into a full-time position with us! We asked them to tell us all about their experience during their time here this summer.

Michael (The IT Intern) -

Looking back on my time with NEC, I am truly sad that this summer internship must end. My position at NEC was active and enjoyable. I gained experience working with MDM software, a massive range of new devices and machines, and even spearheaded a deployment project across New England! This position provided me with a lively location to call my own, where I always had coworkers to make small talk with and was always ready in case, they had issues for me to check out.

New England Construction has a unique DNA in the work world. All past work experiences I have had always seemed a bit off; however, at NEC, I felt right at home. The fear of working a new job was eliminated by my warm welcome to the company, and my lack of prior general experience was welcomed with open arms as everyone around me was always open and willing to share their knowledge. This is what makes NEC a real family. The company’s “Core Values” are what drive the atmosphere in the building!

I have asked to return in the winter to continue a large project, and I hope I get the chance to work in the office once more. Until then, make sure not to press Shift + F4 on your Bluebeam, throw your iPads off your car’s roof, or misalign the plotter!

Thank you, NEC team, for welcoming me into your home, and I look forward to seeing you again!

Corey (The Project Engineer Intern) –

Having never had an internship before, I approached this summer with both excitement and nervousness about what was to come. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I had made a great decision by joining the NEC team. I’ve learned an incredible amount about the construction industry and have developed strong relationships with everyone here. NEC did an amazing job of welcoming me and the rest of the interns, making us feel right at home from day one. The experience and knowledge I have gained in this short time, both in the construction field and in people skills, will be crucial as I move forward in my career. I just want to thank everyone at NEC for giving me this opportunity and making this summer so memorable.

Carly (The Marketing Administrator) –

Returning for my second year at NEC speaks volumes about what an exceptional company NEC is. After an incredible summer last year and continuing part-time throughout the school year, I was ecstatic to return to my second home for another summer. The people here truly make NEC special, and I wouldn’t trade this place for anything in the world. This summer has been nothing short of rewarding, and just like last year, saying goodbye will be incredibly tough. I’m grateful for the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in my classes directly to my work here. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of managing NEC’s social media, earning applause from clients for the quality and creativity of our content. In addition, I've continued to conduct web-based requests for proposals, craft internal resumes for new hires, and discover more creativity within myself through our merch, swag, and apparel projects. This internship is something I’m extremely proud of, and NEC has played a significant role in making an internship experience everything I could ask for. If you’re considering applying, don’t hesitate—this is a place where you’ll wake up excited to go to work every day. Thank you to my second family at NEC for making my experiences something I will NEVER forget! I am pleased to announce that I will be staying on with the team part-time once again during the school year while returning to my studies at the University of South Carolina.

Rohan (The Estimating Intern) –

My internship with NEC left me with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction I could never have found anywhere else. As a construction engineering major, estimating was not the first thing that came to mind when I thought about the construction process. However, when this opportunity arose, I decided to take it, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. During my first week, I was immediately struck by the sense of community and family at NEC. Even with my limited experience in estimating, everyone I met was extremely helpful in answering my questions and supporting me every step of the way. As the months went on, NEC increasingly felt like a second family, ensuring I gained as much experience as possible. I immersed myself in the intricacies of estimating, including client and subcontractor relationships, building takeoffs, bid creation and reviews, site walkthroughs, and much more. Whether it was sitting in on countless meetings, attending new hire lunches, or just taking a five-minute break to socialize around the office, NEC made me feel like a valued team member. I can’t help but feel accomplished by the work I’ve done and confident in my ability to continue my journey in the construction industry. I owe it all to my internship with NEC.

Nina (The Project Engineer Intern) –

This summer has been an incredibly rewarding experience interning at NEC for many reasons. Coming into this internship, I had limited knowledge of the construction industry, as my civil engineering major had only scratched the surface of construction management. My initial nervousness about not knowing enough or exactly what to do was soon alleviated by the endless help and support from the NEC team. From the constant encouragement of project engineers, who reminded me that "there is no such thing as a dumb question," to HR's support in always lending a helping hand in every way possible, NEC is a community that truly embodies the company's core values. I've learned an immense amount about the construction world through experiences in the office and on-site, and I’m excited to bring this knowledge into my final year at the University of Rhode Island and throughout my professional career. As the summer comes to an end, I reflect on the confidence gained, the knowledge acquired, and the connections made during the few months I was honored to spend at NEC.

Kenny (Field Engineer) –

My experiences this summer at NEC have been incredibly educational and exciting, to say the least. I was fortunate enough to visit a few different sites with some incredibly accomplished and intelligent field staff before I landed on my "home" project, the E.J. Prescott warehouse build in West Bridgewater, MA. On this project, I have maintained the role of on-site Superintendent, working under an exceptionally wise and knowledgeable Senior Superintendent who has been guiding me through the processes and protocols that ensure a safe and successful project. Some of the processes and protocols I have gained experience in this summer include creating concise and comprehensive daily logs and inspections that track progress and production, orienting new subcontractors to NEC's on-site safety protocols, and efficiently reviewing plans, submittals, and specifications to be a valuable resource to the subcontractors. I am truly grateful for my time spent with NEC this summer, especially for the people I have been surrounded by. I have worked in many different environments, and what I have observed from NEC is that they deliver on one of their core values of "Embrace the Family." I feel incredibly excited and ambitious about what the future holds. I am so happy to report that I have earned a full-time position with NEC and will continue to grow and learn in a company that fully supports success in the construction industry.

Sophia (The Field Engineer Intern) –

I never could have imagined finding such a great team to work with on my first real-life construction project. I have learned so much from my mentors that I know will be vital to me in the future. I was challenged to think critically over the summer and was trusted to complete my delegated tasks every day on my own. Additionally, being asked questions by subcontractors challenged me to learn my project better. My job site Superintendent and Senior Superintendent guided me along the way and were committed to ensuring I learned as much as possible, which I appreciated. Without their help, I would not have gained all the knowledge I did this summer. My key takeaways include the importance of teamwork and respect as the most important elements of being a supervisor on a site. Collaborating effectively with subcontractors and earning their respect significantly improves both the working environment and the efficiency of project timelines. Additionally, I've learned that working in the field is far from a one-person job— It takes a village to get everything done. This summer was going to make or break my decision to continue my education in Construction Management, and I am happy to say that working for NEC has 100% convinced me that this is what I want to do for a career.

As we all go our separate ways after this incredible experience of growing together and within ourselves, we want to extend a huge THANK YOU to New England Construction, our mentors, Human Resources, our friends, and each other. We are so fortunate to have had this opportunity. If you’re considering applying for an internship here, don’t think again—it's an experience you will never regret.
