Now with a 2-1 count, I’m entering the most crucial pitches of the at-bat. I must perform my best to close out this batter, and the game. At my internship, I’ve recently been called upon to help out with the close out of the Rockin & Roastin Café job.
As the project finishes, I’ve been helping Tom, the superintendent, with the odds and ends of the job, taking on greater responsibilities. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve helped with cleaning out and disassembling the construction trailer, organizing all the extra material on the job, creating contact lists and inventory sheets for the owners of the job, and much more. With the project coming to an end and Tom needing to get on site at his other job, I’ve been asked to represent NEC at Rockin’ & Roastin’ a couple of times. I was very nervous at first, knowing that I would be the only one on site from NEC, and any questions from subcontractors would be asked to me. I always knew who was coming to work on the job each day and what they were supposed to be doing, but I wasn’t sure if I’d know the solution to any problems that came up. Thankfully, Tom has been a great help, always answering whenever I call him and helping me with any questions I’ve had. So far it has gone very smoothly, and I’ve learned a lot about the job and what superintendents really do. In just two weeks, I’ve gotten a great understanding of what is going on here, and have recently been able to come up with solutions to issues on the job by myself. I know that if I take my time, don’t get overwhelmed, and work with the sub, we’ll find a solution right then and there. Working on the completion of Rockin’ & Roastin’ has most definitely been my greatest learning experience of my internship thus far.
Although working at Rockin’ & Roastin’ has been my biggest challenge thus far, it has definitely had its perks. The café is owned by Joey Kramer, the drummer for the rock band, Aerosmith, and I’ve actually been able to meet him through working on the job. The inside of the store is filled with cymbals, photos of Aerosmith, guitars, and even a full size drum set. It is one of the coolest places I’ve ever been in, and it’s been amazing to see it built up by working at the job. At the beginning of July, Rockin’ & Roastin’ had their Grand Opening, and Blake and I were asked to attend the event to assist with parking. It was at the event where I was able to meet Joey and all of the guys from 100.7 WZLX. They set up a radio show right at the café, and people came to watch the event outside and inside the store. It was packed, and a really fun event. Joey went around the store meeting people and signing autographs for his fans. It was a really cool experience to be that close to a celebrity like Kramer and a radio show. If not for this internship, I would’ve never been able to meet a celebrity like Joey. That is the benefit of taking on projects like this one.
I’m ready to throw my next and most important pitch. The catcher gives me the sign for a slider and I nod. I wind up, grip the ball, and deliver the pitch. The batter fouls it down the third base line. Strike two.
